History of the Locale

The history of house no. 207, at present Michalská Street 4, extends back to the Middle Ages as is suggested by its characteristic narrow and deep plot. The house is situated on a historically important street leading to the Dominican Monastery that was established in the first half of the 13th century. The remains of a Medieval stone wall which surrounded the oldest fortified centre of Olomouc around a very old church can still be seen on the western border of the house.

The settlement of this locale has a very long tradition and the Romanesque church was supposedly the site of a pagan shrine. The street in which house no. 207 is situated was called Michaelerberg in 1582 due to the nearby ancient church consecrated to St. Michael. In 1586 it was known as Oelberg and later, in 1750, as Dominikanergasse, again in relation to the nearby Dominican Monastery. Since the 18th century the name Michalská, Michaelgasse in German, has been used.

The first reliably verifiable owner of the house was Hans Arlot in 1572. He was the first in a long and varied line of recorded owners – burghers, craftsmen and merchants who imprinted their fates on the appearance of the house, during periods of prosperity as well as at times of devastation such as during the Thirty Years War or even within the era of the socialist economy. The present owners of the house, Jan Grézl and Sylva Grézlová, have strived to follow the best traditions of this ancient house by renovating and adapting it to the present appearance of the cosy guesthouse “Na Hradě”.
